North Carolina’s First Name in Roller Derby
The Carolina Rollergirls are the original Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) league of North Carolina. Formed in January 2004, it has been our mission to bring an alternative sport to North Carolina while training for national roller derby competition. The league operates as a non-profit 501c3 organization and is run for the skaters, by the skaters, with the support of numerous sponsors and volunteers. The Carolina Rollergirls are smart, strong and amazing women who work tirelessly to build and be a part of a successful league and roller derby community.

The Carolina Rollergirls are comprised of Ph.D.s, Master’s Degrees, attorneys, business women, architects, artists, teachers, students, and mothers, all of whom commit many hours a week to practice and physical training. When not on skates, practicing or playing roller derby, league members can found doing volunteer work. Skaters, volunteers and sponsors alike commit endless hours for the advancement of the league and the sport of roller derby.

The league is made up of home teams who compete against each other as well as inter-league teams that compete against leagues from other cities. The inter-league teams consist of the Carolina All-Stars and theCarolina Bootleggers; both teams travel to other leagues for play. These inter-league travel teams take the top skaters and match them up against other WFTDA teams across the nation. The Carolina All-Stars versus a visiting roller derby team is the main event at home double headers which are played at Dorton Arena.

Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby is not the derby of the past; the track isn’t banked and we’ve dropped the wild theatrics and crazy antics. Staged fighting has been replaced with hard hitting take-outs and perfectly executed booty blocking. Carolina Rollergirls’ fast-dodging jammers are too hungry for points to slow down for silly acrobatics. That doesn’t mean roller derby has gotten soft; the hits get harder and harder every season, and we like to show off our talent every chance we get!

Roller derby requires skill, strategy and fearlessness. It is a game is a fierce competition, charged by a daredevil attitude and a willingness to hit your friends. We may be a mischievous crew of fun loving ladies, but when the whistle blows, playtime is over and the battle begins.

The Carolina Rollergirls are proud members of the Womens Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), which we helped form in 2004. Since joining WFTDA the skaters of CRG have and continue to work tirelessly with other roller derby leagues across the nation to standardize and promote national roller derby competition.

The Carolina Rollergirls skates in the Eastern Region and have consistently shown our league is a force to be reckoned with as we have continued to be in the top ten roller derby leagues for every ranking quarter and opinion poll since 2006.

Roller derby is a sport for women who play life by a different set of rules. We’re proud, hard-working, independent-minded women who get the job done. Our skaters are saucy, energetic vixens who are ready to get down and derby.

If you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day in North Carolina, why not celebrate with North Carolina?

The Produce Lady, a program that advocates bolsering the state economy by purchasing locally grown foods, has collected a list of treats from right here at home that will make your Valentine smile — and feel a lot more personal than a drugstore box of chocolates.

“There’s a common misconception that local foods — particularly fruits and vegetables — are not available during the winter, especially here in North Carolina,” says The Produce Lady co-director Leah Chester-Davis. “In reality, several farmers markets are open through the winter months, and local foods are available year-round.”

For starters, North Carolina has more than 100 wineries, and nearly three-quarters of them are in the Piedmont. Attend a Valentine-themed event, plan a trip to tour a winery, or just pick up a bottle to toast the evening.

Oodles of farms, farmers markets, nurseries and other agriculture producers sell gift items, from roadside stands to pick-your-own farms. Pick one item, or bundle several of your favorites into a personalized package.

The Produce Lady’s recommendations include gourmet pastas from Boone-based The Pasta Wench; pecans from Elizabeth’s Pecans (dark chocolate, orange crème and even jalapeno are among the choices); the namesake product from Farmers Roasted Soynuts; and sweet potato crackers in five flavors from Polka Dot Bake Shop in Charlotte.

Cary to Host U.S. Olympic Table Tennis Trials

Cary will get a taste of Olympic glory in early February as the host for its first-ever Olympic trials in table tennis.

The U.S. Olympic Trials will be held February 9-12, with 39 registered qualifiers competing.

The top eight finishers (four men and four women) will be invited back to Cary for the North American Olympic Trials on April 20-22. The U.S. competitors at those trials will face off against the Canadian table tennis representatives, and the winners will head to London for the summer 2012 Olympics.

Table tennis may not be frequently associated with the world of professional sports because of its alter ego of Ping-Pong, a game that teenagers and college students have adopted as their own. But watching these Olympic-caliber table tennis stars is nothing like playing it in your garage.

One of 26 sports featured at the Olympic Games, table tennis has a strong following internationally, particularly in parts of Asia and Scandinavia. More than 19 million Americans also play table tennis.

The Triangle even has two USA Table Tennis sanctioned clubs, including the Cary Table Tennis Association, which is one of the hosts of the Olympic Trials. Cary is also the home of the Cary Cup, an annual table tennis tournament that draws competitors from around the world, which gave Cary a boost in the host city selection process.

The event will be open to spectators with the purchase of a ticket, starting at $5 for Feb. 9, $10 for other single days, or a four-day ticket package for $30. The trials will be held at the Bond Park Community Center, which the event organizers are hoping to fill with spectators. Live chefs … local celebrities … and a community focused on boosting education.

The nonprofit Garner Educational Foundation will hold its second annual Cooks for Books fundraiser on Tuesday, Jan. 31, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., at Garner TV & Appliance on US 70 West, offering a star-studded night of fun and fine cuisine.

“Celebrity chef Elise Johnson, the 2011 Cooks for Books champion and star of Cooking With Elise, and other noted chefs will work in Garner TV’s fabulous show kitchens,” said event chair Amy White. “We’ll match the chefs with local media personalities Ken Smith and Elizabeth Gardner of WRAL-TV, ABC 11’s Barbara Gibbs and Don ‘Big Weather’ Swenneker, and NBC 17’s Sharon Delaney and Bill Reh.

“Those who attend not only get to enjoy the cooking competition, but also get to engage with — and eat with — the celebrity hosts. And the best part is that the money goes to the Garner Educational Foundation!”

Judges reprising their roles from last year are Jeffrey Bane of the N.C. Chefs Academy, Jeff Hadley of the Wake Tech School of Culinary Arts, and Garner Mayor Ronnie Williams.

Three live kitchens will be in operation at Garner TV, with competition between the three networks on a signature entrée of their choice. Attendees will have the chance to sample and vote on the entrees, as well as enjoy other complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

Each popular vote for an entrée will cost $1 and attendees may vote as many times as they’d like. Awards will be presented for the popular vote and an official judges’ vote coordinated by the N.C. Chefs Academy.

Also, businesses, non-profits, schools and individuals may submit a signature dessert for judging in the Garner: It’s a Sweet Place to Be Dessert Challenge. Entry fee is $25.

Garner Educational Foundation, begun in 1990, serves all 11 Garner area public schools. Cooks for Books, GEF’s only fundraiser of the year, drew more than 350 people in 2011 and raised $15,000, monies earmarked for literacy enrichment programs.

“Literacy is crucial to success in school and life,” said GEF Executive Director Mary Lib Perry. “We are helping children gain the tools and knowledge that will empower them long after they have graduated from our schools.”

Tickets for Cooks for Books are $25 or two for $40; a VIP pass including one-hour exclusive access to the chefs and celebrities is $40. Tickets are available at Garner TV & Appliance, the Garner Chamber of Commerce, Bingham Law Office, or at the door.

Recycle Your Holiday Decorations

Before the season winds down, develop a plan to reuse as much of the holiday cheer that has made it into your apartment as possible. Whether seasonal items need to be carefully disposed of or stored for re-use next holiday season, we’ve got recycling tips for your decorations to help you start your new year in the green!

Disposing of a tree

Most cities and counties have services that will help you properly dispose of a live tree. Check your local government’s Web site, or with scouting or non-profit organizations. Often, municipal yard waste pick-up is expanded to include trees for a specific period of time. If you can’t get curbside service, look for a post-holiday chipping service, perhaps at a nearby home improvement store.

Holiday lights

Candles are a big part of holiday atmosphere. If yours still have plenty of life left in them, store them in tissue-paper-lined boxes. Place large candles inside discarded hose or stockings first. For scented candles that have burned their last, break them up into small pieces and place the shards in a tea diffuser for an instant sachet!

To keep strings of lights from getting tangled en route to next year’s festivities, wrap them around the outside of a metal coffee can. If the lights are no longer usable, label them as such and hold onto them for a light swap next year. Home Depot, for instance, may accept your broken strings of lights toward the purchase of energy-efficient LED lights.

Paper, ribbons and bags

Bows and other decorative items for presents can easily be recycled for next year. Adhesive bows will need tape to stick next year, but will look just as pretty, if you store them carefully. Collect them inside a gift bag or plastic grocery bag for storage.

Gift bags usually fare well through multiple gift-giving. Keep yours in good shape till next year by folding them flat and storing small bags inside larger ones. Wrapping paper is often shredded during a gift-giving frenzy, but if you have a large sheet that made it through the ripping unscathed, you can roll it around an empty paper towel spool and fasten with a paper clip on the end to save it for use next year.

Storing decorations

If you use an artificial wreath, take time to stow it away, dust-free. Wreath bags are handy and often go on sale around the holidays. For a quick and free version, use a dry-cleaning bag, making sure to tie the plastic under the bag to seal the wreath inside. Now you can hang it safely in a closet until next holiday season.

Ornament boxes are a convenient way to store delicate tree decorations. You can also make you own: start saving paper coffee cups with their tops, rinsing and fully drying them. Once the season is over, place a breakable bulb or other delicate ornament inside a cup and secure with the top. If you’ve saved a cardboard cup carrier or two, place your ornament cups inside them, and store everything inside a plastic bin. For very small decorations, an egg carton is great for storage.

This year, plan how you will pack away the holidays before the fun is all over. With a little preparation, you’ll be able to reuse much of the season’s bright accents for many holidays to come.

Jordan, of Garner, has been performing bluegrass music for more than 20 years and formed the popular Carolina Road band in 1998. Known for her lead vocals and hard-driving mandolin chop, she’s a 2011 nominee for the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America’s Entertainer of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year awards.

Carolina Road is a 2011 nominee for the SPGBMA’s Vocal Group of the Year, Instrumental Group of the Year and Gospel Group of the Year awards. The band released its latest album, Back to My Roots, in October, and performs across the U.S., Canada and Europe.

IIIrd Tyme Out formed in 1991 and is led by Moore, three-time winner of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Male Vocalist of the Year award.

The band earned IBMA’s Vocal Group of the Year award for seven consecutive years, and is known for its rich vocal blends and numerous appearances on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Celebrate the first night of Hanukkah at the inaugural Jewish Cultural Festival at the Cary Arts Center. The Chabad of Cary, The Jewish Federation of Raleigh-Cary and Beth Shalom are teaming up with the Town of Cary to host an evening filled with entertainment, crafts and traditional Jewish foods.

From 4 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 20, families can enjoy activities such as candle dipping, clay dreidel making, olive oil pressing and the lighting of a nine-foot Menorah.

Multiple performances of singing, dancing and a children’s skit are scheduled throughout the festival. A performance by Jewish contemporary musician Dan Nichols will conclude the evening.

Donations of canned goods are being accepted through Dec. 19 for a “can-struction” of a menorah. After the festival, the canned food items will be distributed to those in need by the Inter-Fait Food Shuttle.

The “can-struction” will be displayed at the festival alongside other artistic menorahs and dreidels on loan from Cary residents. The festival is free and open to the public.

Raleigh Winterfest opens this weekend

Raleigh Winterfest returns this weekend with a 42-foot-tall Christmas tree, an ice skating rink, sledding and more.

The grand opening celebration on Saturday will feature all kinds of live music, activities for kids and a visit from Santa. You'll find it on City Plaza, which sits at the southern end of the 400 block of Fayetteville Street next to the Bank of America building and on top of the Charter Square parking deck.

Saturday's event runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Skating continues until 11 p.m. Activities include a Santa's Village from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Parents will be able to take their own pictures of their kids with Santa for free. From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., you'll also find sledding ramps and carousel, trackless train and carriage rides.

Most of the activities are free. There is a $1 fee for the carousel, train and carriage rides. Admission to the ice rink is $8 per person, including the cost for skates. You can bring your own skates as well, but you'll still have to pay the $8 admission.

The ice rink this year will be open through Jan. 29. Hours vary depending on the day. And I'm excited that the Downtown Raleigh Alliance, which works to put this all together, is planning some special events again this year. I think parents will be particularly interested in the Sledding Sundays, Two for Tuesdays deal and the stroller skating.

Special activities include:

Sledding Sunday: SnowMyYard.com will create a winter wonderland on Dec. 18, Jan. 8 and Jan. 15.

Two for Tuesdays: Skaters will receive one free admission to the rink with the purchase of one paid admission (includes skate rental). This will come in handy during winter break when kids are out of school.

Music Craze Wednesdays: Enjoy live music at the rink from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Stroller Skate Thursday Mornings: Parents and babies share outdoor fun. Skate and push a strollers on the ice from 10 a.m to 11 a.m. I did this last year with my baby, made a fool of myself and posted a video of it for all to see. Click here to check it out. It's a lot of fun! I might try it again, though I fear my two-year-old would be more interested in trying to get out of the stroller to get onto the ice.

Line-Up Announced for Twenty-First Annual First Night Raleigh Celebration

Raleigh, NC – Michael Lowder, Artsplosure’s executive director, today announced the programmatic lineup for the organization’s annual First Night Raleigh celebration. First Night Raleigh 2012 will feature comedy, dance, spoken word, interactive art installations, and live music from a variety of performers including rock, blues, jazz, gospel, opera, singer-songwriters and more. The 21st annual New Year’s Eve arts festival will take place on Saturday, December 31, 2011, in a 20-block area of downtown Raleigh.

This year’s First Night Raleigh festival takes on a French-inspired theme. Many of the celebration’s dozens of performances and activities have been designed to reflect French influences, including the planned installation of a giant 90-foot Ferris wheel, dubbed “La Grande Roue de Raleigh,” in the 100 and 200 Blocks of Fayetteville Street. Since the early twentieth century, a Ferris wheel has been installed in Paris’s Tuileries Garden leading up to the New Year. Perennial First Night Raleigh favorites like the African American Dance Ensemble, Transactors Improv Company, Comedy Worx and the Lenny Marcus Trio plan to adapt their First Night performances to reflect this year’s French theme.

First Night Raleigh 2012 begins at 2:00 PM on December 31 with the Children’s Celebration at the North Carolina Museums of History and Natural Sciences and on the Bicentennial Plaza. Children are invited to participate in hands-on craft activities including creating impressionist paintings, making miniature sailboats, and decorating their own versions of the Eiffel Tower. “The Owl Tree,” an interactive sculptural installation by Massachusetts-based artist Pam Golden, invites revelers to make a wish for the coming year. Cirque performances, storytellers, musicians, giant puppets and various other artists will be featured throughout the afternoon. A mini French film festival will take place all day inside the NC Museum of Natural Sciences auditorium.

The People’s Procession down Salisbury Street and an Early Countdown at 7:00, preceded by a performance by Onyx Club Boys, will kick off the evening entertainment. Performances and activities will take place in over two-dozen venues throughout downtown Raleigh. Venues will span from the Edenton Street United Methodist Church (with performances by North Carolina Opera and organist Josh Dumbleton) to Marbles Kids Museum (featuring Broadway veteran Lisa Jolley’s one-woman cabaret show) and the Long View Center (with three performances by blues artist Cedric Burnside) and from the NC Museum of History (featuring Canadian singer-songwriter Andy Brown) to the Progress Energy Center’s Fletcher Theatre (with three shows by the Transactors Improv Company). A French-inspired festival would not be complete without accordion music, and accordionists may be found in multiple indoor and outdoor venues throughout the festival footprint. Headlining the Main Stage on City Plaza will be New York-based fusion-funk band The Pimps of Joytime. First Night Raleigh concludes with the Countdown to Midnight, the descent of the Raleigh Acorn, and fireworks.

Bowl-A-Rama

Art meets community service this Saturday (12/10/11), as the seventh annual Empty Bowl Project takes place at Vandora Springs Elementary School in Garner.

Handcrafted ceramic bowls created by fourth-grade Art Club students at the school will be bartered off on Saturday in exchange for local food pantry donations.

Art teacher Jim Hunt leads the student effort; he’s been involved in the international Empty Bowls Project for 20-plus years, and says schools all over the world take part.

“The projects may differ from school to school, but the goal of all of them is to gather food,” he said.

This year’s handmade ceramic bowls — numbering more than 80 — are painted in metallic and iridescent hues, with some boasting a mother-of-pearl sheen.

The “exchange rate” is one bowl per 20 non-perishable food items, which will be delivered to nearby Garner Area Ministries’ food pantry, serving local families in need.

The project is important to both the students and the Garner community, Hunt says.

“It gives the students a chance to use their talents to reach out to help people. And all the food donations go right back into our community, to the shelves of Garner Area Ministries,” he said.

New this year, all bowls will be showcased in the Vandora Springs Elementary cafeteria for the convenience of guests, who can choose a bowl and drop off their food donations in one stop.

Students will sort and box the food donations, which Hunt notes can go beyond canned goods to include pasta, cereal and more.
Bowl-a-Rama will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., or until all the bowls are gone.

The fun begins with real snow on Friday night, at the

Light Up Main tree lighting celebration.

Set for 6 to 8 p.m. on Main Street in Downtown Garner, this family-friendly event features paint-your-own ornaments, local entertainment and food, and visits with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.

New this year: The tree lighting will be held at the start of the event, so don't miss it!

On Saturday, the Garner Christmas Parade steps off at 10 a.m. from Main Street complete with floats, marching bands and more.

Two friends, one dream — and a full menu of chef-inspired meals.

Edwin Hoyt IV and Nathan Roby are the owners of TerraFin Station in Garner, which in August celebrated its first anniversary. The restaurant’s creative name reflects its land-and-sea themed menu.

“Everything on the menu here is food I enjoy eating,” said chef Roby. “It’s comfort food, with a twist. Selection and variety are what people are looking for, and we’ve got something for everybody.”

With more than a dozen new dishes added to the menu in recent months, Roby’s not exaggerating. TerraFin’s menu extends from Classic Cheeseburgers to gourmet Lobster-Shrimp Mac-n-Cheese, featuring pan-seared seafood in a five-cheese cream sauce over penne pasta.

Ahi Tuna Salad combines grilled ahi tuna with sweet peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and fried wontons, with sesame wasabi vinaigrette, made in-house.

“It’s a fan favorite,” said Hoyt, who operates the front of the house. “The name downplays how good it really is.”

The house specialty is steak — hand cut, Certified Angus Beef. Merlot and Garlic Ribeye is the restaurant’s biggest steak seller, born of a marinade recipe Roby developed years ago.

Other popular dishes include seafood jambalaya and baby back ribs. Wings are big here too, literally.

“We buy the biggest I can get my hands on,” Roby said. Added Hoyt, “People actually from Buffalo (N.Y.) come here, saying they’re the best they’ve had.”

Roby creates all dishes from scratch, including salad dressings, sauces, soups and even fries. He’s also intent on using North Carolina-sourced foods, including all-natural Ayden catfish and organically grown local produce.

“First, there’s all that North Carolina has to offer. Then, we live here, so we want to help support the local economy and farmers,” he said. “That’s important to me.”

TerraFin Station serves lunch and dinner daily, complete with kids’ menu, and hosts a late-night bar crowd, plus Sunday brunch and ballgame showings.

Roby, an Ohio native, and Hoyt, of New York, met as co-workers at the Bahama Breeze restaurant chain, where Roby was executive chef. Both have worked in restaurants since their teens.

Seeing a need for fine dining in Garner, they chose the Old Drugstore building on the corner of NC 42 and Cleveland School Road as home to their dream. Built in 1936, it’s among the area’s oldest buildings in operation, serving over the years as a gas station and general store.

Now, with an understated décor, the restaurant offers ample dining space and a brick-walled bar, one of two full-service, ground floor bars.

It also boasts three meeting areas for banquets up to 100 people; upstairs features its own bar and private party room.

“We love the restaurant business, and love interacting with people,” Roby said. “When people leave here, we want them to feel they’ve just had a great meal at a great price — a great dining experience.”

Rembrandt: A Dark Genius

Dennis Weller, curator of Northern European art at the North Carolina Museum of Art for 16 years running, has always wanted to do an exhibition on Rembrandt.

On Oct. 30, his wish came true.

The result of years of planning and collaboration, Rembrandt in America runs through Jan. 22 at the museum’s East Gallery.

In total, the exhibit showcases nearly 50 paintings — including more authentic Rembrandt works than have ever been exhibited together in America. Every piece in the collection was at one time believed to be a work of the 17th century Dutch master, though some have now been tossed out of his oeuvre by scholars.

Some of the paintings are believed to be works of Rembrandt’s pupils or contemporaries, including Jan Lievens and Govert Flinck. “Workshop” pieces show detail reminiscent of Rembrandt’s touch in parts of the art but lack the same level of genius in other areas. They are believed to have been painted partially by Rembrandt and finished by other artists.

Staff encourage patrons to observe the level of detail — particularly in expressions and attire — and note differences in authentic paintings and ones from Rembrandt’s pupils. “We hope visitors will walk back and forth between paintings,” Weller said.

The first painting in the exhibit is one of Rembrandt’s most iconic works, a self-portrait in his characteristic dark tones that gives patrons a glimpse into the eyes of the master himself.

“When you are creating an exhibit like this, you have a wish list and a reality check,” Weller said. “This was at the top of our wish list.”

Other works showcase Rembrandt’s famous style and illustrate a progression of both the artist himself and the changing attitudes of art collectors in America.

Weller emphasizes the degree of emotions conveyed through his works, from a tear forming in the eye of a soon-to-be-lifeless Lucretia moments after plunging a dagger into her heart, to a somber widow mourning the loss of her husband.

The last time a signed Rembrandt painting was known to be in North Carolina was in 1959. The Rembrandt in America exhibit will travel to the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts after leaving the NCMA.

Safe-n-Sane Halloween

On Halloween night, the Town of Cary is teaming with Cary Towne Center for a festive celebration for kids 15 and younger. The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. “Not So Scary” Storytelling at Centerstage, plus pumpkin weight and candy guessing contests. From 6-7:30 p.m., kids are welcome to trick-or-treat throughout the mall. A costume contest will reward those with the best outfits in different age groups. Secret judges will select among all attendees to participate in the costume contest finals, held at 7 p.m. at the Centerstage. In order to be considered for the costume contest finals, participants need to be trick-or-treating throughout Cary Towne Center beginning at 6 p.m. Also at 6:30 p.m., The Magic of Shaun Jay will perform at the Centerstage.

Mysteries and Secrets

The Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel will present “More Mysteries and Secrets: Exploring Cary-Area Cemeteries” to address questions about some of Cary’s historic gravesites. Join the 2011 Le Tour de Femme, a women-only cycling event with the mission of raising awareness and funding for cancer research and survivorship programs.

Local nonprofit Grab My Wheel presents this sixth annual tour on Saturday, Oct. 8, departing at 9 a.m. from Cycling Spoken Here, located at 1377 NW Maynard Road in Cary.

Le Tour de Femme offers female cyclists of all skill levels from across the country the opportunity to participate in rides of 15 miles, 31.2 miles or 62.4 miles. Since the tour’s inception, more than 1,000 riders have raised almost a quarter million dollars for cancer research and survivorship programs.

Proceeds of this year’s event will benefit the Rex Hospital Angel Fund and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Grab My Wheel was founded in 2006 by cyclists Ron Hamner and David Goodall. The organization provides physical, emotional and financial support to people with cancer, and to the institutions dedicated to finding a cure.

Is Centerfest still located in Downtown Durham?
Yes! Just north of the 5 Points area, the festival will take place across the street from Durham Central Park on Foster St. You can pay a $2 fee to park in the large parking decks on Morgan St., or find some parking lots closer to the site that are free and open to the public! Get directions here.

How much does it cost?While we strive to keep CenterFest a free event, Durham Arts Council incurs substantial expenses in presenting this annual street festival for the community. For this reason we ask that those who can afford to do so make a $4 per person donation ($12 for a family of 4 or more) as you enter the festival. We appreciate your support in making CenterFest happen.

Can I bring my dog, cat, ferret, etc?
While we understand that your pet may be very well behaved, the festival presents a variety of smells, sounds and motion that may startle an animal and provoke a reaction. We are sorry, but we no longer allow pets at CenterFest. Exceptions are made only for guide dogs in service to individuals with special needs.

Is this held in a park?

APEX JAZZ FESTIVAL

By In its inaugural year, the Apex Jazz Festival will hit Salem Street in downtown Apex on Saturday, September 17. One outdoor stage and 10 indoor venues provide ample room for a full day of jazz beats from renowned artists.

The festival, organized by the Apex Downtown Business Association, will run from 2 p.m. until midnight with performances going nonstop. It’s designed with a pub crawl setting in mind, with restaurants and eateries along the street featuring pub bands and headlining acts setting up at the Halle Cultural Arts Center.

Silver-level wristbands permit entrance to all pub bands for $20, and gold-level bands allow headliner access as well for $30.

Headlining the event is The Quintessence Orchestra, an improvisation-based group that takes on a variety of styles and genres of music. Other performers include the Back N Time Band, Gary Brunotte, the Jo Gore Duo and many more.

Free of charge, local acts will perform on an outdoor stage at the Apex Chamber of Commerce lot. Selections there include open mic performers, student rock bands from Music & Rock School, and Peak City Sound, the Apex community band.

The Apex Downtown Business Association will be giving away tickets via the Downtown Apex Facebook page beginning this week. Volunteers are also needed for the festival, and will receive complimentary tickets. Tickets can also be purchased through the Apex Jazz Festival website.

On any given day outside the entrance to a well-known home improvement store in Cary, Jim Rivers serves hot dogs with passion and purpose. Since 1998, loyal customers come early and often, lining up in front of the nifty portable cart with the red-and-yellow umbrella.

“What are we gonna have today?” Rivers cheerfully asked one patron, who patiently waited in line. It’s a common sight at lunchtime. During a recent Friday during an exclusive photo shoot with Cary Magazine, business was booming.

“It’s not uncommon to sell more than 150 hot dogs on weekdays, and 250 on weekends,” said 61-year-old Rivers, a gregarious Warren County native who now calls Rolesville home. “I just wanted a simple business where I could make a living and serve people.”

Jim’s Hotdogs features acclaimed Nathan’s and Southern Red products, including top-selling beef along with red, jalapeño and sausage. Abundant condiments — such as mustard, ketchup, chili, onions, slaw, relish, cheese, hot sauces, mayonnaise and sauerkraut — are on hand for no extra charge. Each frankfurter is prepared to order and wrapped in aluminum foil.

The hot dogs are set apart by key ingredients like fresh, steamed buns, quality chili and creamy slaw. “We source our buns daily from Flowers Foods, and use an all-beef, no-bean chili and a mayonnaise-based sweet slaw,” he said.

Besides frankfurters, Rivers offers 14 different ice-cold canned drinks, bottled water, bagged chips and double-decker Moon Pies.

Prices range from $2 for one red hot dog and a drink

to $4.50 for two beef wieners and a drink.

Additional specials offer chips, and posted prices include tax.

Rivers pays monthly rent for the prime location that attracts a wide assortment of people, many of whom he calls by name. One such person is carpenter Mark Ellington from Raleigh, a regular who comes three times a week for a sausage dog and Mountain Dew. “I’d rather support an independent person like myself than go to a chain restaurant,” Ellington said.

The Roast Grill, an iconic hot dog joint near downtown Raleigh, offers a one-of-a-kind culinary experience. Where else will you find seating for only 12 people and possibly dine next to a lawyer, doctor, senator or even a former governor?

The Roast Grill’s genesis traces back to Greek immigrants George and Mary Charles, who originally started a restaurant on Martin Street but then opened the current location in 1940. “My grandmother called me to come here 19 years ago and take over for her,” said owner George Poniros. “She worked here until she was 88.”

The no-frills building features the original stainless-steel backsplash, black resin counter and swivel-style barstools. A pushpin-laden bulletin board holds countless yellowed business cards, while a back corner mirror showcases obituaries — a makeshift memorial to former Grill regulars.

Poniros, 53, mans the eatery’s two-knobbed original grill. It’s there that he cooks each hot dog until charred black. “Our motto is ‘we burn ’em for you!’” he said. “The wieners are a special Swift Premium product from Michigan. They are 90 percent beef and 10 percent pork.”

Hot dogs are $2.50 each. Toppings include Sauer’s brand mustard, hand-chopped, mayonnaise-free slaw (which costs an additional 25 cents), Texas sweet onions and a “century-old family recipe” house-made chili.

Ketchup is nowhere to be found, though. In fact, there’s a “no-ketchup-allowed” policy that’s been in place as long as the restaurant has been open for business. “My grandparents spent too much time making the hand-crafted chili for people to ruin it with ketchup,” Poniros explained, wearing his trademark round eyeglasses and a black Roast Grill T-shirt. French fries and chips are also not accessible, but, thankfully, Texas Pete hot sauce is. “It’s all about the wieners,” said Poniros.

The Roast Grill serves glass-bottled Coke and Diet Coke along with a handful of beer choices like Budweiser and Foster’s.

“This place has the best hot dogs around,” said regular Ron Hughes, an N.C. State University employee.

Recently, the Travel Channel television network visited The Roast Grill and filmed an episode of popular show Man v. Food. Host Adam Richman ate 17 hot dogs, breaking the eatery’s record for most consumed in an hour. “Since then, people have come here from all over the country and the world,” Poniros said.

Farm Owner Nevida Faircloth has been selling her homegrown blueberries since the 1980s. The farm is open to the public during blueberry season, which typically runs from mid-July to mid-August. The farm typically receives more than 150 visitors coming to pick their own blueberries during the season.

The cost is calculated by a per-pound fee.

Bouldering Basics

For the adventurer in the family, North Cary Park offers a pair of bouldering rocks for those who wish to put their climbing skills to the test. The two man-made rocks are eight feet tall at the highest point and are joined in the middle.

Recreation Manager Dwayne Jones says the rocks are designed for all ages and skill levels. “The nice thing about it is that it is used by more experienced climbers to practices traversing the rocks. They fine-tune their technique and work on different holds and foot positioning by working their way around the rocks. The less experienced climbers and the younger crowd typically make it their goal to climb to the top.”

The park is open from sunrise to sunset and is free to the public. Supervision for children is recommended, as this is an unstaffed facility, but there is a protective soft surface below the rocks.

Whether the swan dive or the belly flop is more your style, you can cool off with a midday dunk in Jordan Lake State Recreation Area.

The state park in Apex is owned and maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers and

offers three areas for swimmers to kick and splash.

The Ebenezer Church, Parker’s Creek and Seaforth areas have roped-off swimming sections and sandy beaches. They are open to all park visitors year-round.

During the summer months, the park and swimming areas are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Be aware, though, no lifeguards are on duty; however there are life preservers on-site.

Entry into the park is $6 per car.

Bass Lake Park in Holly Springs has fish aplenty,

and the rods and reels are free.

Thanks to the park’s library system for loaning out fishing equipment, the ultimate kick-back-and-relax sport is accessible to everyone.

“The program is part of the North Carolina Wildlife Commission,” said Park Manager Sabrina Thompson. “You get a little blue card and you can check out a rod and reel like you would check out a book at the library. There is no charge.”

And while catching something isn’t a guarantee, Thompson says the stocked lake and fish feeders mean fishers almost always get a bite.

In addition to fishing, Bass Lake Park also has canoe and boat rentals for those who would rather get out on the lake than enjoy it from the dock.

The facility is a North Carolina Environmental Education Center and offers hiking trails, a nature library, kids’ camps and other community activities like bingo and concerts. Catch Some Gnarly Air

The Sk8-Cary Skate Park is a 12,000-square-foot facility in Godbold Park offering a full range of services for skateboarders and BMX bikers from the greenest novice to seasoned pros.

Facility Supervisor Billy Dexter says this skate park differs from others in the area because of its emphasis on safety. “We require people to wear pads and helmets and do things the right way,” he says. “That makes it a great facility to get into the sport, and makes it safer for everyone.”

For newcomers interested in trying out a skateboard or BMX bike for the first time, or those who want to learn new skills, camps, track-out programs and lessons cater to a wide range of abilities. During the weeklong camps, students spend the entire day skateboarding or biking and come together at the end to play games and group activities. In addition to learning more about the sport, instructors also focus on team building and confidence.

For those looking for a little practice time on the course, or just a fun way to get some exercise, the park is open daily for two-hour skate or bike sessions.

Special memberships are available for $30 per year for Cary residents and $60 per year for non-residents that include discounted rates, free sessions and monthly promotions. Two-hour skate sessions are $9 for non-members and $4 for members; BMX sessions are $10 for non-members and $5 for members. Moving company regulations
One of the most pervasive rumors about the moving business is that it’s an unregulated industry that doesn’t adhere to standards or checks and balances. While it’s true that regulations vary from state to state — and that unethical businesses sometimes skirt the law — the moving business is, in fact, regulated. Interstate movers, for example, are required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which is a division of the United States Department of Transportation. The FMCSA helps consumers distinguish between professional movers and unregulated ones (usually referred to as “rogue” movers), requiring moving companies to register with the administration. The FMCSA has also implemented regulations to protect consumers from fraudulent practices.

The ProMover certification
Because they know that their industry sometimes gets a bad rap, moving companies themselves also take steps to regulate their industry and maintain a high reputation with consumers. One way for a moving company to do this is to obtain the “ProMover” certification.

Created by the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA), the national trade organization for the moving business, the ProMover designation is similar in intent to an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. To earn this certification, a moving company must:
•Be in compliance with state incorporation laws.

•Sign a contract pledging to adhere to state and federal laws and AMSA’s Code of Ethics.

•Be screened for felons.

By holding ProMover companies to strict standards, AMSA promises that any company with the designation provides high-quality customer service. Every ProMover company is reviewed yearly. If a company fails to meet standards, it loses its designation. AMSA recommends that consumers only deal with ProMover-certified moving companies.

Learn the facts
Once you’ve done some research and found professional movers that represent the highest standards in the industry, it is good to learn some facts about the types of practices that reputable companies employ. The following points will help you know what to expect when dealing with legitimate moving companies:
•These movers will offer an estimate. Professional movers will be happy to come to your home and do a free walk-through to determine how much your move will cost. Note that there are different types of estimates (binding and non-binding), and you should be aware of the type of estimate you receive since this designation affects the final price you pay. (For more information on types of estimates, see our Moving Terms Dictionary.)

•These movers will require a contract to protect both their and your interests. Once you choose a mover, you should complete a signed, written contract that includes pick-up and drop-off dates for your belongings, as well as documentation of how many items are involved in your move (either how much they weigh or how many linear feet of space they will take up on a moving truck).

Alegría is a visual wonderland full of richly colored costumes, painstakingly hand-detailed with lace, feathers and sequins. And the show’s musical score, performed live, moves between jazz, pop, tango and klezmer, evoking the sound of traveling minstrels with acoustic instruments, as well as synthesizer arrangements.

Topped with a giant dome and decorated with stylistic columns and balustrades, the elaborate Alegría set is an imposing monument. The stage floor is dappled with splotches of impressionistic color and light.

Alegría has entertained more than 10 million people worldwide since its 1994 premiere, and features an international cast of 55 performers and musicians from 17 countries. This marks the production’s first visit to the Triangle area.

If you missed out on the first event, you're missing out on the dirtiest fun you'll ever have with a 5K race! It's a pretty muddy affair! Many folks ask how tough is the course? It can be as hard or as easy as you want it to be. There are semi-professional runners down to your neighbor next door.

One thing is for sure. When you run this race, the Marines will make sure you finish it. Part of the Marines Creed is to never leave another Marine behind. And for this event, no runners will be left behind!
Race times:

5k Individual Race - 8:00 am

Pollywog Jog - 9:30 am

5k Team Race - 10:15 am

Runners will be required to be at the race site no later than one and a half hours prior to your race. The races will run on time with or without you. You should give yourself adequate time to park, pick up your race packet, and put your running bib number on.

Registration fees are as follows: Individual Racers-$25 ($35 on race day), Team Race-$100 ($140 on race day), Pollywogs-$10 ($20 on race day)

Mail-in Registration forms must be postmarked no later than Friday, June 3, 2011.

The Raleigh Arts Festival

Celebrate the arts at Artsplosure 2011 – the Raleigh Arts Festival. This year’s event will be held May 19th – 22nd in downtown Raleigh. As one of the Southeast’s premier arts festivals, the event attracts up to 80,000 people.
One of the festival’s main components, the art market showcases the talent of more than 170 juried visual artists and crafters from across the country. Artwork by fine artists and crafters exhibiting in 11 different categories will be available for purchase, including painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, and more. The booths will line Blount, Martin, and Hargett Streets near Moore Square and City Market.

The festival will feature more than a dozen musical performances on two stages in Moore Square. This year’s lineup includes funk headliner Average White Band, jazz-fusion band Spryo Gyra, blues rock band Devon Allman’s Honeytribe, singer-songwriter Anders Osborne, electronic artist Lynx, the local jazz sounds of Shana Tucker Williams Trio, gospel artist Shamia, folk pop artist Brent Stimmel, local Indie favorites Hammer No More the Fingers, the acoustic roots music of Craicdown, and more.

Kidsplosure provides activities and entertainment for children. Kids will discover their inner artists by creating the make-and-take offerings at the event. In addition to the many arts and crafts available, the Kidsplosure Stage will provide live family-friendly entertainment throughout the weekend.

England’s acclaimed Architects of Air return to Artsplosure with AMOCOCO – the largest luminarium in their collection of original inflatable sculptures. You are invited to explore Amococo’s more than 10,000 square feet of labyrinthine tunnels, cavernous domes and 71 pods filled with light and colors that span the entire spectrum. The Devils Ridge Golf Club in Holly Springs will celebrate its 20th anniversary on May 20 from 6–10 p.m.

The event will include live entertainment, appearances by the Carolina Railhawks and a movie shown on the golf course.

Devils Ridge, along with five other local ClubCorp facilities, will be on hand to provide club information and tastings of food specific to each club.
“The event will have a carnival atmosphere with games for kids, food stations and a raffle prize valued at $800,” said Cindy Hager, membership director for Devils Ridge.
The celebration kicks off with live music by the GB4 band from 6–8 p.m. GB4 is a Raleigh-based band that plays a diverse set of music ranging from classic rock and modern rock to funk and soul.
At sunset guests will be invited to relax and watch the family-friendly movie Hook on the driving range. Bring a blanket or beach chair. Food, drinks and movie snacks will be available.
This event is open to the community. Guests are encouraged to invite their friends and family for a night of fun and relaxation on the golf course.

Advance tickets for the event are $10 for adults and $5 for kids.

Ticket price includes food; alcohol will be sold separately.

Tickets will be available at the door for an increased price.

“Raffle tickets will be sold for $20 apiece with all proceeds going to the Central and Eastern North Carolina Food Bank to aid in tornado relief,” said Hager.

Third Eye Blind has sold more than 8 million albums. Best known for the singles “Semi-Charmed Life,” “How’s It Going to Be,” “Graduate,” “Jumper” and “Never Let You Go,” to date the band has released four albums, with rumors of another release later this year.
Also performing will be Dillon Fence and Raleigh’s own Lonnie Walker. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the show starts at 6 p.m.

Band Together NC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit composed of business and community leaders and volunteers from across the Triangle. Since its inception in 2001, the organization has helped raise more than $1 million for philanthropic organizations through one mission: using music to raise funds and awareness for local charities.

The charity recipient for the 2011 concert is Alliance Medical Ministry, a faith-led nonprofit working to provide affordable health care to the working uninsured in Wake County.

“Our goal this year is to raise $500,000 for this organization making a difference in the lives of people in our community,” said Danny Rosin, president and co-founder of Band Together NC. “After nearly tripling the amount raised from 2009 to 2010, we can’t wait to see what the 2011 event has in store. Our goal is to touch the community in a different way each year, using the powerful medium of music.”

Last year’s Band Together NC concert attracted more than 2,500 music lovers and raised more than $358,000 for StepUP Ministry.

Tickets for the May 7 concert are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. VIP tickets are $150 and include exclusive access to catered food and beverage, VIP seating, and a silent auction.

Great News!

Raleigh has secured a new public recycling drop off center. It is a “mini” drop off center as it only has two of the large drop boxes.

Only corrugated cardboard goes in one box and all other

13 materials we accept goes into the other box.

Eatman's Carpets at 8101 Glenwood Avenue has agreed to partner with us and has graciously agreed to allow us to put these two recycling containers in their north side lot.
They are easily seen from Glenwood Avenue but can only be accessed if you are headed southbound on Glenwood. If you are headed northbound on Glenwood, do not turn at the stoplight at the corner where Eatman’s is located as you can not access the recycling containers from there. Instead, go past the stoplight and make the first u-turn and come back on southbound Glenwood and turn in the lot just before Eatman’s store.

As always, please respect our new partner; leave only recyclable material at this location INSIDE the recycling containers. Do not leave any material on the ground, this is private property. Remember, this is a small site with only two boxes. Should you encounter full boxes, please report them to Solid Waste Services Customer Service at 996.6890 and they will be promptly taken care of.

Animal Grossology at The Museum of Natural Sciences

Ever wonder why dogs sniff each other’s rear ends, why cows need four stomachs to digest their food or why cats spit up hair balls? Here’s your chance to find out!

Animal Grossology, a new special exhibit at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh, takes a unique and scientific look at nature’s slime-making,

vomit-munching and dookie-loving creatures.

Adapted from the best-selling Grossology children’s book series by author and science teacher Sylvia Branzei, this exhibit is oozing with disgusting science and entertaining hands-on learning games such as Blood Sucker Blow-Up, where visitors see what happens when ticks and mosquitoes have too much to drink, and Chew Chew Express, a detailed look at the various steps of digestion in cows, one of the gassiest animals on Earth.
Visitors will also learn how leeches are sometimes used after surgeries to assist in the healing process and why scientists are studying the slime produced by slugs and snails for clues in treating cystic fibrosis.
Safety tips are dispersed throughout the exhibit, such as what to do if a jellyfish stings you and how to protect your food at the next family picnic.

Raleigh’s biggest and best Easter Egg Hunt will take place at

Moore Square Park on Saturday, April 23, 2011.

This is a FREE event, with more than 30,000 eggs for kids to find,

as well as live music, balloons, inflatables and more!

In previous years, Raleigh Easter festivities attracted overflow crowds to Moore Square,

and volunteers are prepared for an even bigger response this year.

There will be four different egg hunts, each divided into zones by age group,

as well as separate zones for children with special needs.

If your a long time resident of Sumter Square Apt's, you know that

Easter is a special time for all our little ones!

3,000 easter eggs filled with yummy candy will be strewn about for the delight of the children,

as well as the chance to meet the infamous Easter Bunny!

Everyone will be gathering

infront of the office at

11am on APRIL 2, 2011.

We will be holding the entire hunt in the park area of the community, where the youngest children will be on one side of the creek and the older children on the other side of the creek. Parents will be able to keep a lookout for all of their children this way and not be seperated.

Children will be seperated in to age groups of 0-4 & 5-12.
When we are all assembled, ages 0-4 will follow the Easter Bunny to their designation. Ages 5-12 will be released in all of their chaos about 5 minutes later to their designation.

There will be 10 Golden Eggs this year!
The prizes are gonna be great, so keep your eyes peeled! We have everything from play-doh sets for the littlest bunnies...to Air Jams for the bigger bunnies!

Understand Your Lease Before Signing It

Signing a lease for a new apartment can be very exciting — and intimidating. You’ll be better equipped to read the lease and catch anything that doesn’t make sense, if you know what to expect. Here are some tips on what can be found in a typical apartment lease.

Who signs the lease?

Every lease is a contract, and as such will name the people who have entered into the contract and are legally bound by it. That should be your landlord, yourself, and any roommates you might have. Any roommate whose name doesn’t appear on the lease isn’t legally liable for rent; if you take on a new roommate after the lease has been signed, you might want to ask the landlord to issue a new lease.

The basics

The landlord should include information about who manages the rental property, including address and phone numbers. The lease should also identify which property is being rented. The lease should also include the specified monthly rent and the amount of the security deposit. It should specify when a rent payment is considered late, and what the penalties are for late payment. It should specify that it applies for a given length of time (say, 12 months) and spell out what happens when one party or the other decides to terminate the lease early.

Some leases will specify how far in advance you need to notify the landlord you need to renew; some will default to a “month-to-month” agreement after the original term runs out. You’ll want to know this well in advance of deciding whether or not to renew.

The lease should include information on penalties if you break the lease, as well as whether you would be able to sublet or find a new tenant if you have to leave, and whether there is an “automatic renewal” clause, in which the lease is renewed unless you give notice by a certain date.

Who fixes what?

Your lease should indicate who is responsible for repairs. Frequently leases make tenants responsible for minor repairs and landlords responsible for major ones, though this may differ depending on your rental management company.

Other items

Your lease may, or may not, include details on the following:

•Pet fees: Many apartment communities require an additional security deposit or rent to have a pet on the property.

•Utilities: You and your landlord should already have agreed on what utility payments you will be responsible for.

•Modifications: The lease may specify that you cannot make significant changes to the property, including painting, replacing carpet or floors, or knocking out walls. If you really want a change to the apartment, you might be able to negotiate this ahead of time. Make sure that any repairs or modifications you agree on verbally are written down in the lease.

Signing the lease

Take the time to read your lease thoroughly and carefully because once you sign, the terms are legally binding. If you don’t understand a clause, ask for clarifications. If you want to make or request changes to the lease, both you and the landlord should initial them.

Save a copy of the final lease signed by you and the owner or manager. This document is the most important document to help you if there’s any disagreement about the apartment or anything related to it.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Moving Pets

Moving isn’t just hard on you.

Packing, moving and unpacking can also take a toll on your pet — especially if have a long way to travel to your new home. Here are some do’s and don’ts for moving with a pet that could help ease the transition.

Moving pet do’s

Moving pets can be tricky. Can they go in the moving van? (No.) Can I ship them? (Yes.) Can they stay in a hotel? (Depends.) Here’s what you should do when you move with your pet:

•Do plan ahead: If you know you’re moving cross-country and are flying to your new home, make all the necessary arrangements for your pet to fly with you. This means making special accommodations for your dog to be transported, either on the plane in the cargo hold or shipped by a pet transport company like WeMovePets.com. (Small dogs might be able to fly with you as passengers.)

•Do buy a good pet carrier: If you’re driving a long distance or flying, then you’ll need a good pet carrier that will protect your animal during transport.

•Do talk to your veterinarian: He knows your pet well and can advise you on whether your cat is up for major traveling. If needed, he can even prescribe a pet tranquilizer to help calm your animal down, particularly if you have a nervous dog or neurotic cat.

•Do get your pet used to the drive: If your cat never goes anywhere with you, take him on short drives leading up to the move. That way, he won’t spend the entire drive with his claws in your leg, making the trip both painful and dangerous.

•Do change your pets’ collar tags: The day you head to your new home, put the new tags on identifying your new address and new phone number in case the worst happens and you get separated from your pet.

•Do keep pets away from the moving madness: While loading up the moving van, keep them in a quiet place away from all the turmoil.

•Do find a new veterinarian before you move: Having a new doctor in your rolodex might save you precious time. Make sure to have not only the new vet’s phone number, but his address and directions to his office.

•Do comply with local laws. Many municipalities require pets to be registered with animal control in case a collar is lost. Follow the laws once you move, or you could be fined.

Moving pet don’ts

There are many things that can go wrong during a move. Losing or hurting your pet shouldn’t be one of them.

•Don’t wait until the last minute to arrange transportation: Book both of your tickets well in advance of your move.

•Don’t try to transport your pet in the back of the moving van: It’s not safe during the move. Make other arrangements.

•Do call any hotels before arriving to confirm that your pet is welcome: Many hotels do not allow pets to stay in their rooms, though that trend is changing. Consult PetsWelcome.com for pet-friendly hotels that allow animals to stay with their owners.

•Don’t forget to pack a pet travel kit: This kit should include food, a bowl, a leash, medications, and plastic bags to scoop up waste. You may also want to bring toys to provide fun distractions for your pet.

•Don’t feed your animal right before the move: They might get motion sickness.

•Don’t forget the walks: If possible, try to keep up with your animal’s normal routines: Walks, feedings, bathroom breaks. This should help keep their anxiety down from the move activities.

Moving your pet can be fairly easy if you follow some easy pet travel do’s and don’ts.

Decorating Your Apartment Walls

You’ve unpacked the boxes and arranged your furniture, but something’s missing: wall decor! Don’t get bored with blank walls; use your creativity and get something up there pronto. It’s easy to unleash your inner artist and decorate your apartment walls.

Set the scene
Painting your walls, or even just a single wall, makes a great backdrop for artwork. A neutral wall paint makes colorful artwork pop. If you are hanging black and white photos, try a bright red wall so the high contrast images can really shine. Another option is to let your wall paint be the decor. Painting stripes or geometric shapes can really add impact to your apartment walls. Here’s a tip if your painting skills aren’t so great. Try using removable stick-on decals. It’s a non-permanent way to add interest to your walls, and you’ll find hundreds of designs to choose from.

Pack in photos
Once you’ve got your walls painted the base color you want, it’s time to decorate them. Hanging photos is an inexpensive way to display your personal memories so that you can enjoy them every day. Help Keep Your Pet Safe with Identification

If your dog or cat got lost, how would you find your furry friend? To keep your pet safer and ease your mind a bit, you’ll want to make sure it’s wearing an ID tag clearly labeled with your contact information.
Here are some tips on how to make sure your dog or cat is wearing its proper identification.

Types of tags
Simple identification tags for your pet’s collar come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and styles; you can find them at pet stores or order them online. Whatever style you prefer, make sure the ID tag includes, at a minimum, your pet’s name and your phone number. (For greater flexibility and timeliness in an emergency, you might list your cell number instead of your home phone.)

Online registration
Another way you can help ensure a reunion with a lost pet is to register the pet online. After registering with a Web site such as Fido Finder or Get Me Home, you’ll receive an ID tag with the pet’s ID number. If someone were to find your lost pet, he or she could enter the ID tag on the Web site and receive your contact information in return. This could be most useful if you share custody of a pet with another person, as you can list multiple contact numbers on the site.

Electronic identification
Another possible pet identification method is to have a radio frequency ID (RFID) chip implanted under the skin. The RFID chip, about the size of a grain of rice, is injected beneath the pet’s skin; no anesthesia is required. Unlike a tag on a collar, an RFID chip can’t be easily torn off, lost, or removed. If your lost pet ends up in a place equipped to scan for microchips, such as a veterinarian’s office or an animal shelter, the information in the pet’s chip can be coordinated with the chip manufacturer, such as HomeAgain, to reunite you with your pet.

Required tagging
Another aspect of pet tagging is a legal one. Your dog or cat may be required by state or county law to wear a tag showing that it has been vaccinated for rabies. When you take your pet in for its vaccination, ask the vet whether you’ll receive a rabies tag in the mail or should order one yourself. Keep the paperwork that comes with your rabies tag so that you have a record of your pet’s vaccination, as well.

How to Recycle Electronics and Appliances

If you’re trying to live greener, you probably already have some of the basics of recycling down. But recycling electronic equipment can be more challenging even as you keep replacing outdated machines with more powerful and sophisticated versions. Here are some tips for keeping your old electronic equipment and appliances both out of your apartment and out of landfills.

Try your manufacturer
Some manufacturers and retailers are now more aggressively promoting electronic recycling. Dell Computers will recycle your old Dell-branded computer for free. Apple’s recycling program is free in some areas. If you don’t have a Dell or Apple computer, you may be able to bring your equipment in for recycling to a nearby office supply store: both Staples and Office Depot have electronics-recycling programs.

Recycling centers
The Environmental Protection Agency offers information on “e-cycling” and allows you to search locally for e-cycling centers. Also check with your state or city to see how electronic recycling is handled. Montana’s Department of Environmental Quality, for example, has a list of local programs and “e-waste” events. The city of Chicago has a program that allows residents to recycle batteries at local drugstores and public libraries. Your apartment community will probably not have resources specifically for electronic recycling, but your managers might be able to give you local information, or even help you organize a community-wide e-waste pickup.

Should you give away instead of recycle?
Are you getting rid of the appliance because it no longer works, or because you needed a replacement? Even the most obsolete computers and phones can find homes. You can see if someone will give your old equipment a new home by describing it on your local version of Craigslist.org or Freecycle.org. People will often be happy to come to your apartment — or to a designated meeting space, if you’re concerned about your personal security — to pick up interesting items.

Programs also exist to put older computers and accessories into schools, such as those listed by TechSoup, a technology resource site for non-profit organizations. Check with your city, county, or state to see if it has such a program. Similar programs for cell phone recycling are more numerous, including Cell Phones for Soldiers and ReCellular. You can also check with your service provider about whether they’ll recycle your old phone.

Talk to your office
One final option, if you’re having trouble, is to talk to the human resources department at work. If you’re in an office where computers and machinery are changing constantly, it’s possible your company has a contract with an electronic equipment recycler. You may be able to add your electronic equipment to their next recycling haul, or even organize an e-waste recycling day company-wide.

Sharing Common Areas with Your Apartment Roommate

You may find that it’s easy enough to keep up your own room in your apartment, but what about maintaining common areas? Read on for our guide to maintaining harmony in shared spaces in your home with a few simple maintenance habits.

Set the rules
Whether you and your roommate are new to each other or are moving together into a new place, laying the ground rules early is a must. That doesn’t mean you need to create a draconian lists of do’s and don’ts, but it does require thinking carefully about the habits that drive you or your roommate crazy, and then getting those details out in the open. Living with a roommate requires compromise, so be reasonable and willing to work out differences for your mutual benefit.

To share or not to share?
Often, the biggest roommate disputes revolve around food. Money can be saved when roommates pool funds to buy in bulk, but if one of you has a significantly larger appetite than the other, someone will feel short-changed. Similarly, if one roommate has special dietary needs, whether by preference or due to food allergies or a health condition, be sure to respect the other by either not cooking certain foods on shared pots and pans or by not eating the other’s vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free, peanut-free, wheat-free or kosher food and beverages.

Everybody cleans
Another area for potential conflict is having a different tolerance for messiness than your roommate. Coming up with a regular cleaning routine and sticking with it can help by ensuring that common areas get clean before you or your roommate can get squeamish about the disorder. The best way to keep the workload fair is to have each roommate clean up after him or herself every day and then split the work on cleaning common areas such as the bathroom or kitchen.

Spend time together
The easiest way for petty resentments to get out of hand is for communication to break down. Don’t let that happen! Even if you and your roommate each lead separate, busy lives, find a way to do something fun together regularly, whether it is going to the farmer’s market, seeing a movie, or having a dinner party. Creating a bond through shared experience is the surest way to maintain a happy household.

Don’t let squabbling over common areas spoil your relationship with your apartment roommate. Create clear, reasonable rules at the beginning of your time together, and share in the work and enjoyment of your apartment. You’ll never regret the effort to make your home a happy one.
